WEST PALM BEACH — For its 2008-09 season, the Kravis Center is going all out for Broadway.
In addition to its previously announced inaugural Kravis on Broadway series of touring shows, including Legally Blonde: The Musical and The Drowsy Chaperone, a host of Broadway luminaries and Tony Award winners will be appearing on the Kravis Dreyfoos Hall stage.
Among them are Carol Burnett (Jan. 17), Brian Stokes Mitchell (April 9), Barbara Cook (Dec. 16), Lily Tomlin (Feb. 10), Jackie Mason (Feb. 2), composers Stephen Sondheim (Feb. 4) and Marvin Hamlisch (March 8), and the reunion of the original stars of Evita, Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin (March 25).
Entering its 17th year, the Kravis Center remains committed to diversity, offering something for everyone. Says senior director of programming Lee Bell, "The Kravis is a lot about, 'What kind of meal do you want?' You can have a gourmet meal with Stephen Sondheim or you can have junk food with Dixie's Tupperware."
Sondheim, who has created such landmark musicals as Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George, will appear in a South Florida exclusive public "conversation," with musical excerpts by Christine Ebersole. Dixie's Tupperware Party (Nov. 11-16) is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the versatile plastic containers, described as "a hybrid of improv, drag show and social satire."
The season features plenty of returning names who have proven popular and several notable performers making their Kravis debuts.
Among these acts are pop singer Rufus Wainwright (Nov. 9), comedian Lewis Black (Oct. 5), rock star Peter Frampton (Oct. 25), Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill (Nov. 18), jazz legend Wynton Marsalis (Jan. 28), veteran hitmakers America and Christopher Cross (Feb. 3) and New Orleans bluesman Dr. John (March 3), who will share the Kravis stage with the Neville Brothers.
New beginning this fall, the Kravis is also getting into the movie business. Starting in October and eleven times throughout the season, the center will present Movies by Moonlight in the Gosman Amphitheatre, such as Grease, The Sound of Music and Singin' in the Rain.
A popular phenomenon of recent years has been the tribute bands offering cover versions of classic rock 'n' roll groups. Next season, look for The Music of Led Zeppelin (Jan. 13), The Pink Floyd Experience (Feb. 14) and Blue, a tribute to Joni Mitchell (Jan. 2-4).
Membership to the Kravis Center is available from $75 and includes priority seating opportunities based on level of donation. Public ticket sales for the 2008-09 season will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20. For more information on the Kravis's upcoming season, call (561) 832-7469 or go to http://www.kravis.org.
