Fall colors traditionally tend toward earthier and heathier tones, but in the past few years the onset of October brings with it a decidedly cheerier shade.
Thanks to October's designation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 and the support of many firms (particularly those in the fashion, jewelry and beauty sectors who create products to support the cause) it's all about putting on pink.
There are hundreds of things, not all of them oriented to the fashion minded, available with each benefiting a particular breast cancer research, screening, treatment or education organization.
Here is just a sampling of some of the striking pink products that several fashion firms are currently offering:
* Tory Burch will donate 10 percent of proceeds of the limited-edition 'Tory' tote, $195, and cosmetic bag, $45, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The items are available at www.toryburch.com.
* Sleep- and activewear maker Juliana Rae is donating 20 percent of the sales of its Indulgence wrap, $196, available at www.julianarae.com, to the Living Beyond Breast Cancer organization.
* Twenty percent of proceeds from the private label fuchsia flapper dress, $72, available online at www.eDressMe.com, will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
* Susan G. Komen for the Cure is to receive 100 percent of sales proceeds from the sale of 1,000 limited-edition Custo Barcelona T-shirts, $65 each, which are available at Custo Barcelona boutiques across the country or at www.custo-barcelona.com.
* Alyssa Dinowitz, founder of Arizona's Chewylou Designs, created the LIVE cotton T-shirt in honor of her mother, who is fighting breast cancer for a third time. It is $32, with 7 percent of sales proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and available only online at www.chewyloudesigns.com. * The Pink Pony Fund of the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, which supports programs for cancer treatment research, early diagnosis and patient education in medically underserved areas, will receive 10 percent of proceeds from sales of the Ralph Lauren cotton Beaded Hope Tee, $198, which is available at Polo Ralph Lauren, 300 Worth Ave.
* The National Breast Cancer Coalition will receive 30 percent of proceeds from sale of Belabumbum's bamboo chemise, $72, available online at www.belabumbum.com.
* Buxom, a new L.A.-based sleep and loungewear label, is donating 20 percent of proceeds from the sale of its $120 Knot style printed chemise, available online at www.buxominc.com, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
* Ananas Handbags will donate 50 percent of proceeds from sales of its 'M' clutch, $115 (online at www.ananascollection.com), to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
* Ralph Lauren rugby shirt, $175, with $17.50 from each sold benefiting the Pink Pony Fund for cancer treatment, at Polo Ralph Lauren, 300 Worth Ave.
* Jewelry designer David Yurman is donating 10 percent of proceeds from sales of his $3,600 Signature Cable Candy bracelet in 18-karat gold with garnet and pink sapphires, available online at www.davidyurman.com, to BreastCancer.org.
* Limited-edition Splendid 'World Pink' polka-dot cotton tank top, $42, with $5 from each tank sold donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation; available online at www.splendid.com and at Saks Fifth Avenue stores.
* Jay Strongwater's Pink Reflections mirrored compact for Estée Lauder, which features a picture frame cover into which any photo can be inserted, is sold with a matching lipstick in a set for $150 at Saks Fifth Avenue, 172 Worth Ave. All sales proceeds of the Estée Lauder product benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
* Ralph Lauren's Pink Pony terrycloth robe, $198, with 10 percent of sales proceeds going to the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation's cancer fund, available at Polo Ralph Lauren, 300 Worth Ave.
