Cora Beard Mayne, a former longtime resident, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at her home in Newport Beach, Calif. She was 94.
Born in Metcalfe County, Ky., Mrs. Mayne earned an undergraduate degree from Western State Teachers College, Bowling Green, Ky.
She lived in Louisville, where she taught in the public schools from 1941-45, when she moved to New York City.
She received her master's degree from Columbia University in New York in 1945 and joined the faculty of St. Luke's School.
Mrs. Mayne married Dr. James L. Mayne of Beverly, Mass., moving there in 1967 and teaching in the public schools. She remained there until Dr. Mayne's death in 1975.
Upon retirement in 1983, she moved to her home in Palm Beach, where she supported for the Kentucky Society of Palm Beach, Dreyfoos School of the Arts Foundation, English Speaking Union, Palm Beach Round Table, Palm Beach Literary Society, The Society of the Four Arts, Mental Health Association of Palm Beach, American Red Cross, the Arthritis Foundation and Northwood Institute.
In 1999, she moved to Newport Beach to be near her brother, Robert, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by a brother, George Beard of Louisville; a niece, Loretta Turner Williamsen of Newport Beach; and several nieces and nephews in Kentucky.
Her interment will be held at the Memory Wall of Pacific View, Memorial Park, Corona del Mar, Calif.
