Dr. Michael Longo, a retired surgeon and a longtime resident of Palm Beach, died Sunday, July 20, 2008. He was 84.
Born June 28, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Manupelli.
Dr. Longo attended St. John's University and Columbia University, and earned a doctoral degree from the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City.
He began his career as a surgeon in 1948 with his internship and residency at the Osteopathic Hospital of Portland, Maine.
He was a founder of the James A. Taylor Osteopathic Hospital, where he became chief of staff and surgery.
In 1972, he was elected president of the Maine Osteopathic Association.
In 1975, Dr. Longo moved to Palm Beach County, where he became a founder of Community Hospital, now known as Columbia Hospital.
He became president of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons in 1982. In 1986, he was a founder of Wellington Regional Medical Center, where he served as chief of staff and surgery.
Dr. Longo was a life member of the Palm Beach Opera, where he served on the board and as an auditor of its annual voice competition.
He was a founding member of the Italian Cultural Society of Palm Beach and was a member of the National Italian American Foundation.
He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister.
Dr. Longo is survived by his wife of 22 years, Virginia "Ginny" Longo; a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Jane and Michael Hanscom of McLean, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gale Longo of Bangor, Maine; four grandsons, Jeffrey Hanscom of Washington, Gregory Hanscom of Philadelphia, Kevin Longo of Bangor and Landon Longo of Bangor; and a stepdaughter, Emily Glover and her husband, Joe, of Wellington. His first wife, Rosemary, preceded him in death.
A private burial service will take place Saturday in Bangor.
A memorial service will be held in Palm Beach in fall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
