Win A Book — Only Not Because You Voted!

Voters waiting outside Palm Beach’s Fire Rescue Station 1 today. Please note, Northern readers: voters in shorts! PBDN Photographer Jeffrey Langlois took this and other photos. See them all here.
[UPDATE: Readers/commenters Eloise Olivia and Morgan won copies of The Kennedy Family Album, because that’s how we roll around here. My thanks to co-worker Kelly for reading and commenting!]
My colleague Michele Dargan has a fun post on PBDNotebook about all the free stuff your “I Voted” sticker will get you.
Inspired by these offers from Starbucks and others, I wrote a post earlier today saying I’d randomly select a person who left an “I Voted” comment on my blog to win a free book.
So imagine my horror when I heard on NPR that offering anything as a condition of voting violates federal elections law. Well, we took that puppy down faster than you can say “Joyce Reingold is a law-abiding, if clueless, citizen.”
Turns out Ben & Jerry’s has worked around this little detail by declaring it is “celebrating democracy” by giving away free scoops of ice cream at its stores this evening.
So in that spirit, if you leave a comment on this blog post today your name may be selected by a random number generator to win one of two books — The Kennedy Family Album or George Hamilton’s new tell-all, Don’t Mind If I Do.
You get to choose because after all, we’re celebrating democracy.
