7 Reasons To Visit The South Florida Fair
1) 4-H Exhibits: The handiwork of these industrious boys and girls is inspiring — and it’s fun explaining 4-H to the kids. (Quick, without looking — what do the four Hs stand for? Answer below.)
2) Animalia: “Party With the Animals” is this year’s theme, so there are more feathered and furry friends around than usual. I love seeing the just-born calves, can’t help but feel sorry for their labor-worn Mamas, and always admire the fancy chickens and rabbits.
3) Caramel Corn: I found myself ordering it at one of the concessions. Now if I could only remember which one! The best ever — buttery, sweet, crunchy, peanut-laden. Look for a stand that sells it in plastic bags with the corners twisted shut. UPDATE: Look for the best caramel corn on the Midway at the Popcorn & Cotton Candy stand facing the Seattle Wheel.
4) The Unexpected: Running into people you haven’t seen in years. Laughing over a spot-on personality profile from the handwriting analyzer. Seeing a straight-faced clown drive a guest down the Midway in a courtesy shuttle. Feeling like a kid again.
5) People-Watching: It doesn’t get any better than this. Great trend-watching, too. I loved the big, brightly colored plastic hoop earrings so many of the young girls were wearing.
6) Old-School Rides: My crew prefer the flashy new diversions, the kind that shake the change out of your pockets. But there are some great-looking, older painted ride “sets” sprinkled in; you just have to look. Some of the best: the Pirate, Rainbow and Wipeout.
7) Boost The Economy: I don’t remember money flying from my hands any faster than it did at one of the games. A smooth operator talked us into dropping so much money so quickly we literally walked away dazed — and fully admiring his questionable gift.
The fair runs through Feb. 3. Find everything you need to know at www.southfloridafair.com
