Go Green On National Park(ing) Day

A scene from the first Park(ing) Day
Friday is National Park(ing) Day, and I’d like to tell you this means there will be no parking tickets issued in town tomorrow but if I did I’d be lying.
Actually, it’s a day when parking spaces throughout the world turn into miniature parks — “at least until the meter runs out” — to highlight the benefits of green space and public parks.
Park(ing) Day originated in one of my favorite cities, The People’s Republic of San Francisco, where in 2005 members of the art collective REBAR dropped coins in a meter and transformed a parking space into a park. You can watch a video about the project by clicking here.
“By our calculations, we provided 24,000 square-foot-minutes of public open space that afternoon,” REBAR says on its Web site.
The Trust for Public Land has embraced the celebration, and is partnering with Design Within Reach to celebrate National Park(ing) Day at the Clematis Street store.
You’ll be able to relax on DWR’s mod outdoor furniture in metered parking spaces morphed into parks while drivers circle the block looking for a space so they can dash into Starbucks.
DWR promises a full day of activities, including a panel discussion about greening our cities. Refreshments will be served. You can RSVP to westpalmbeach@dwr.com, or given the spirit of the day, I imagine it’d be OK if you just show up at the park.
